How to Get Rid of Breakage and Flyaways

You spend hours washing, blow drying and styling your hair for a few flyaway hairs to steal the show: sound familiar?

You’re not alone. Flyaways are common. Annoying; but common. So, what can you do to get rid of flyaway hairs?

We’ve compiled the best tips our hairdressers have to offer on taming those rebellious strands.

First, try a few changes to your regular hair care routine.

Hair doesn’t necessarily need to be washed every day. Sometimes the sleekest hair days can come on the third or even fourth day after you wash it. Try a cold rinse after you’ve rinsed your conditioner, use a nozzle on your hairdryer - adding another cool shot for good measure - or finish with a touch of hair oil, such as Charlie Miller Gloss Oil.

Avoid vigorously drying your hair with a towel. Wrap it up instead; use a hair turban or invest in a micro-fibre towel if you can, to soak up the excess moisture. Let your hair air dry for as long as possible, taking the last of the moisture out with a gentle blow dry.

Silk bedding, particularly pillowcases, are becoming increasingly popular as it’s far less damaging on your delicate locks. Add in a silk scrunchie to your routine for good measure.

If you’ve switched up your routine and are still plagued by unruly hairs, check for signs of breakage. Hair breakage is when strands of hair snap or split and can sometimes be confused with new hair growth. These broken hairs can appear as flyways, stopping you achieving that sleek look we all covet.

There are a few remedies you can try at home to tackle hair damage, including:

  • Changing your shampoo to better suit your hair type. Look for products that nourish. Choose a paraben and sulphate free option for the best results such as the Charlie Miller Hydrate range
  • Blow-drying and straightening your hair on lower heat settings, or trying to forgo your electricals more regularly
  • Using a gentler brush
  • Using a deep conditioning treatment

Most of the time, using shampoo and conditioner alone isn’t enough to give your hair the treatment it needs so try using a heat protector like Charlie Miller Blow Dry Crème or Charlie Miller 10-in-1 spray. Keep your hair hydrated with Charlie Miller Gloss Oil between washes and remember the sun and air conditioning can contribute to brittle hair too.

Our hairdressers are well versed in hair damage and can help you on your hair-repair journey. A luxury hair treatment and a professional blow dry can work wonders on the appearance of flyaways. Don’t hesitate to ask your hairdresser for advice on how to achieve that sleek blow dry yourself.

Taming flyaways in a ponytail

Pulling your hair into a ponytail for a simple, classic look is sometimes easier said than done; if you find those flyaways ruining your otherwise perfect pony, try spraying a little hairspray on an old brush, or even a toothbrush, to gently tease them into place.

Getting rid of breakage is achievable when you pair great products, good advice and perseverance.
